It’s just to the become so it begins to falter, although slap-up finale rescues they from the ‘red’. Admirably staged and you may intelligently dialogued, it will have no high challenge in lifestyle down its incredibly unattractive identity.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Flick Bulletin told you “The film moves during the a fast pace, this new talk is smooth and you can characterisations essentially active. The latest film’s author and you can manager, Robert Rossen, creates a good multidimensional chess game, to possess mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Received), an effective cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever brother (Nina Foch) spent some time working from the local casino and you can dated a good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic software, the newest cast’s suavely managed gestures out-of love and you will danger, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and fashionably cocky photographs (as well as his political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet detailed spectacle a hidden vintage of style.” [ ten ]

Cobb, because the an authorities inspector, plus within the rating . Even though the plot follows a familiar trend, the new characterizations is fresh therefore the performances sufficient so you’re able to overbalance. It is mostly a point of seeing Mr. Powell experience his paces smartly if you’re an enormous cast out-of actors and you may actresses offer him classic help. Evelyn Keyes takes on the favorable little lady exactly who brings forth the latest best in your and you can Ellen Drew ‘s the easy and you can slinky vixen whom becomes your into jams. Thomas Gomez try greasy because the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb really does a different sort of in a position concert tour once the a weary police inspector which in the long run closes possible.
